The Iznik art of chini production was in its peak of success during the 16th century but unfortunately disappeared gradually towards the end of 17th century without leaving any documentation regarding its production. Iznik Foundation insisted on researching the characteristics of these artefacts for two years until this lost art was brought back to life.
The R& D centre established by the Foundation was supported by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) . Today, it is possible to produce Iznik tiles and ceramics with the similar process of 16th century with higher technical standards and processes.
As the main component of Iznik chini is quartz; not earth or clay and although it is in the category of ceramics, it differentiates from other ceramic products including porcelain.
The base (biscuit) of the Iznik tiles and the undercoating, as well as the basic material of the glaze (defined as sir secret in Turkish language) are all produced from the mysterious stone: quartz, a highly difficult material to work with.
Iznik tiles, are produced by using contemporary technology with traditional techniques in the ateliers in Iznik where as the main offices are in Istanbul.
One totally handmade single tile is produced in seventy days. Each stage of the production is handled by Masters trained in specific processes like all colours are applied by the Master trained at the Foundation for one colour only. The colours are produced by the R& D department specifically; imported colours or chemical colours are not utilized.
Apart from the wall tiles for interior or exterior wall covering applications; Iznik Foundation produces pottery (vases, plates, bowls etc) referred to as Goktug group
Iznik Foundation revives the traditional designs while creating contemporary designs at the same time.
