Tennants UK were established in 1967 to supply number plates to the motor trade around the East Midlands area, at which time plates were black metal with white or silver digits. Tennants are founder members of the British Numberplate Manufacturers Association BNMA in 1974 The association is a body that liaises with the government DVLA and the police, on legislation, licensing, car crime, speed detection and congestion charge schemes During the 1970s Tennants established themselves as a major national number plate manufacturer and were one of the first companies to achieve the British Standard BSAU 145a The Standard stated that all vehicles registered after 1973 had to be fitted with reflective number plates and achieve a strict performance standard In the late 70s the acrylic plate was introduced The registration number was displayed against a reflective panel a clear plastic plate was adhered on top Ink transfers were used for the registration number although thermal printers took over from transfers in the late 1990s This system remains in use although quality standards were improved in 2001 with the introduction of the upgraded British Standard BSAU 145d. The DVLA appointed Tennants as a sole supplier of dealership trade plates in 2002 This is a prestigious high quality contract that Tennants won against competition from all other major number plate manufacturers In 2004 Tennants launched their laser graphic sign system LG Plates which is one of the few major improvements in number plate production for 25 years.
