What is Black Cohosh Extract?
Black Cohosh, according to wikipedia, is a species of flowering plant of the family Ranunculaceae. It is native to eastern North America from the extreme south of Ontario to central Georgia, and west to Missouri and Arkansas. (known as both Actaea racemosa and Cimicifuga racemosa) Black Cohosh has many other common names include black snakeroot, bugbane, bugwort, rattleroot, rattletop, rattleweed, and macrotys. Preparations of black cohosh are made from its roots and rhizomes (underground stems), and the most common specification of black cohosh is 2.5% triterpenoid saponins, or 2.5% Triterpene Glycosides.

Black Cohosh is the colloquial term for the plant Actaea racemosa, also referred to as Cimicifuga racemosa. The supplement contains the dried rhizomes of the plant, and the plant itself is a coarse woodland perennial herb with a thick, knotted root system and growing up to 1-2.5m in height with compound, pinnate leaves up to 7cm in length. The plant is native to North America, spreading from Canada to Georgia.
As a herbal product, Black Cohosh contains a variety of bioactive compounds such as: Cycloartanol compounds such as acteol and actein, cimigenol and cimicifugoside; these tend to be seen as the active ingredients and are sometimes referred to simply as triterpene glycosides.
