Each cylinder in the engine has a corresponding plunger which is responsible for pushing the fuel mixture through the injector nozzle. The plunger regulates the amount of fuel that enters the injector and sets the timing interval for each injection. The plunger opens the fuel valve with every backward stroke. When the plunger begins to move forward, it pushes the fuel out into the nozzle with the right amount of downward force.

It is similar to that of a piston pump, but the high-pressure seal is stationary while the smooth cylindrical plunger slides through the seal. These pumps typically run at a higher pressure than diaphragm type pumps.
