Eames? Aluminum Group
Introduced in 1958
Designers: Charles Eames, 1907-1978, Ray Eames, 1912-1988
Design History/Concept
- Conversations between Charles and Herman Miller textile designer Alexander Girard about the lack of high-quality outdoor furniture available on the market inspired this design
- Eames produced the first chairs as a special project for the Irwin Miller house in Columbus, Indiana, which Girard and architect Eero Saarinen designed
- Originally, Herman Miller marketed these chairs for use in outdoor or indoor residential and corporate environments, although they are not currently recommended for outdoor use
Product Features/Benefits

conforms to the body's shape
- Layered vinyl cushioning inside fabric or leather upholstery provides additional comfort
- Cygnus seat material is also available; this self-contouring, flexing material provides aeration, even weight distribution, and long-term comfort
- Upholstered in traditional fabric or leather, the chair's seat and back are ribbed at 1 7/8-inch intervals for a clean, refined appearance
- With one-piece, curved aluminum side ribs and an aluminum base, the chair is strong, yet lightweight and easy to move
