The variety of Ethiopian arts and crafts extends far beyond those listed above. Pottery making, woodcarving, leatherwork and hornwork are all developed to a high level of skill. The Muslim artisans of Harar are renowned for their exquisitely crafted silverware, including delicately worked bracelets.

Other Crafts

There are several types of materials woven in Ethiopia, from the heavy blankets called buluko made by the Konso people of the south-west, to the high-quality cotton cloth for womens dresses manufactured by the Dorze and Gurage weavers. Special skills are necessary for the weaving of the multicolored design strips, called tibeb, which are added to the borders of womens garments.

Weaving

The best-known and most colorful basketwork is from Harar. The largest items are the mesobs, round basket-tables with elegant, tightly woven geometric patterns on which the meal of wot (spicy stew) and injera (bread) is placed. A decorative lid is provided to cover the remains of the feast. There are other colorful basketworks available from different areas of the country.

The cultural complexity that has arisen out of Ethiopias long and diverse history means that an almost bewildering selection of quality art and craft products can be found, often with, innovative modern designs incorporating traditional elements and motifs.
