Woven by Wolof women in Senegal
Wolof women in the West African nation of Senegal have honed their basket weaving skills through many generations, traditionally creating baskets from local
dried grasses and strips of palm fiber.
Today, Wolof women craft a growing variety of beautiful baskets using traditional technique with a modern twist. About 20 years ago, someone introduced strips of plastic from a deconstructed
prayer mat. The women adapted their baskets to include this new binding material, as it is far easier on their hands and brings a spectrum of colors to their fingertips.
Our Wolof bread baskets are woven from a local grass called njodax and pure white strips of plastic recycled from prayer mats or purchased from a mat factory in Dakar. Available in three
useful sizes, these lovely baskets bring serene style to your home decor.
