When Kenyans face a challenging situation, they rarely back down. Julie Church and Tahreni Bwaanali showed the world a perfect example of Kenyan ingenuity when they established the UniquEco
brand.
There were two problems afoot that needed remedy. Tahreni needed to find a way for Swahili people on the Lamu Archipelago to earn money to buy vegetables to round out their diet. Julie needed
to find a way to get tons of flip flops off Lamu's beaches.
These beautiful one-of-a-kind baskets represent the solution. Islanders are paid a fair wage to collect the flip flops from the beach transform them into beautiful works of functional art. The
beaches are cleaned up for sea turtle nesting and tourism, and everyone's enjoying life with a balanced diet and pocket money. Perfect!
Each basket is completely unique.
