This pen commemorates the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing. Displayed inside the capsule of the pen is JSC-1A Lunar Regolith Simulant or Moon Dust. Designed by NASA for exploration funded projects, it closely matches the chemical composition, mineralogy, particle size, and properties of lunar mare soil. It is mined from volcanic ash deposit in a commercial cinder quarry located outside of Flagstaff, Arizona.
The Write Stuff
Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the moon. It carried astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon. As he descended the lunar module and stepped onto the moons surface, Armstrong proclaimed, Thats one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
