S. Treasury department mints our nation's currency. Proof-quality minting is an exacting art that requires exceptional attention to detail. Original artwork must first be created, then be hand sculpted in plaster. Next comes several reduction and molding process' before being ready to be carefully hand engraved into steel dies. Each die is carefully detailed then hardened and polished to perfection. During striking, dies must be polished intermittently to maintain a high quality standard. These dies must be replaced frequently to maintain their sharp detail. In some special editions in pure 24kt gold, each coin is edge numbered in the sequence it was minted. The low numbers are especially valuable as they represent the purist image from the newly polished dies. Only hand polishing produces the special mirror finish of a proof-minted coin.
