DESCRIPTION: The masks are performed once a year in festivals linked to harvesting of crops or other family festivities. These masks are painted before the performance and then the fibre costume is attached. The patterns on the mask have meanings known only to initiates: the large Xs refer to the scarification marks on the foreheads of initiated men: the checkerboard pattern represents the separation between good and evil. The large crescent on top of the plank denotes the moon that shines during the seasons when the masks perform.
