Elise Hoelzel was born 1897- 1977. Listed in "Who's Who in the West;" she won many ribbons and awards, including the St. Louis Globe-Democrat award, first in portraiture in St. Louis, Mo and a Gold Medal in lithography, the Midwestern Exhibition. She studied at Stephens College in Columbia, MO, the Kansas City Art Insitute and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia where she studied under Daniel Garber and Hugh H. Breckenridge. She won the Cresson European Travel Scholarship, the Toppan prize, and took first in portraiture in the CalifornIa regional competition of National League of American Pen Women. She held a number of private exhibits in the La Jolla, CA area.
