during the renaissance, a technique called fresco was used. in fresco, no bind was used, but the painting was applied into wet plaster (for example, walls, ceilings) and could not be washed off. the sistine chapel in rome is a good example of fresco. it has been agreed that this took michaelangelo four years to paint the ceiling of the sistine chapel, so therefore it had to be pre-planned by means of a cartoon. the cartoons were traced onto the wet plaster. the cartoon is the design and was divided into sections to represent each days work. michaelangelo did not do all the work for the sistine chapel and other projects himself. that would have been impossible so therefore he used apprentices.
