Giangs early life was steeped in the countryside. Although born in Hanoi, in 1969, he lived with his schoolteacher parents in Bac Ninh until he went back to the city to study. His early contact and impressions of the countryside never left him even when he went to live in Europe, where he stayed for seven years. The tranquility of the rural world is something that drives so much of his art and thinking. Quiet, romantic, and delightful rural scenes arouse strong emotions in me, [and] are endless inspirations for my creative power, it is the real native land, where man always wants to come back to, Giang wrote in his first catalogue for Aroma d. D Gallery in Hanoi where he shows exclusively. Pham Kien Giang deals with memory of time and place in a soft and gentle manner, which is touched by the charm of the naive. His countryside is like a rural idyll in which a sense of innocence dominates. One sees it clearly in such works as Water Season 12 and On a Rice Field (2003) . In a Water Season 12 a solitary peasant is bent in silent work. The sky above is as if it were lit by some strange cosmic source, the trees seem to bend towards the peasants as if to embrace them. One can easily imagine the stillness around the peasant broken only by the faint sound of a tool striking the ground. In On a Rice Field the is the greater sense of space and this increases the feeling of the isolation and loneliness of the two peasants working the field.
