Working Up Steam" |

The wooden tugs of the New York Central Railway System commonly known as "Boot Heel" steam tugs (because of the shape of their wheelhouses) are shown here at their Weehawken facility on the
North Hudson. These 1930's vintage tugs were expressly designed to transfer railroad cars from one side of the New York Harbor to the other on large barges known as car floats.
Characterized by their tall wheelhouses with lots of windows, these tugs operated around the clock in three 8 hour shifts and were affectionately known as "lunch pail boats". These types of
railroad tugs were built from the late 1800's and some operated well into the 1960's. Limited Edition (500) offset lithograph 15 x23 image Signed, titled and numbered by artist Shipped Flat |
