Remarks from the Artist:
The specific representation of the Havdalah service in the form of a candle positioned on a backround of black and white is not my original idea. I have seen variations of this theme around. My contribution can perhaps be explained by the following comment, made by a client who purchased the candle and suggested the following interpretation of its symbolism.

In this picture is written the entire Havdalah Service and the mystical songs said at a special after - Sabbath meal. The color scheme represents the idea, "to make a distinction between light and darkness, holiness and mundane."
What is the Havdalah Service? Right after the Sabbath, in a traditional Jewish home, there is a five miute ceremony during which a candle is held and blessings are said (written in the candle). Contained in the meaning of the blessings is the hope that now, after again experiencing the Sabbath, we have renewed our ability to distinguish between holy and profane, thus facilitating our understanding to make proper decisions during the week.
