Pellet boilers have been virtually non-existent in the US until recently because fossil fuels were so cheap, and because very little attention was paid to renewable fuels in this country. European companies spearheaded the development of these boilers as a response to high carbon taxes assessed on non-renewable fuels such as oil and gas. Pellet boilers are now a good alternative to traditional oil and gas-fired boilers, and their numbers are expected to rise substantially in the years to come.
Made from compressed sawdust and other waste wood, wood pellets are now made locally throughout North America. Any oil-fired system that uses radiators for delivering heat (as opposed to forced air is an excellent candidate for a retrofit with a solid fuel pellet boiler.
Solid biofuel boilers work just like the oil boilers that are so common in the northeastern part of the US. The big difference is that the fuel used in solid fuel biofuel boilers, usually wood pellets, is a renewable, carbon-neutral fuel.
