For stability reasons empty container handlers should be used on hard, smooth surfaces such as concrete. Equipped with air filled pneumatic tires these empty container handlers are designed for use in exterior situations.

Built with planetary drive axles these larger fork lifts also have air brakes, and 3-speed powershift transmissions. Most commonly equipped with six cylinder diesel engines, empty container handlers rarely, if at all, come from the factory with the optional eight cylinder gasoline or LPG (propane) engines.

These empty container handlers have the ability to stack containers 3 to 5 high, or more. Aa side-pick attachment instead of forks that's hydraulically expandable from 20' to 40' depending on the container's length being handled is available on some empty container handlers. These integral spreader bar attachments have twist locks that lock the container to the attachment for handling purposes.
