Compound motors the compound motor work by the series and shunt design designs are combined.

Series Motors Series' motors are well-suited for high-torque loads like power tools and automobile starters because of their high torque production and compact size.  These motors connect the field windings in series with the armature and their lack good speed regulation.

Shunt Motors Shunt motors use high-resistance field windings, which are connected in parallel with the armature.  By varying the field resistance it changes the motor speed.

Permanent magnet motors Permanent magnets instead of armature windings are used and mounted on the rotor.  The magnetic field which is produced on the rotor is limited in strength and isnt controllable.  Permanent magnet motors are typically small and produce little horsepower.

In spite of the drawbacks of DC Motor such as power supply, initial cost, and maintenance requirements the DC motors are widely used particularly in applications like cars and small appliances.  The following are some uses of the DC motors.

Applications For DC Motors

The biggest advantage of DC Motors may be speed control.  Speed is directly proportional to armature voltage and inversely proportional to the magnetic flux produced by the poles, adjusting the armature voltage or the field current will change the rotor speed.  Adjustable frequency drives are used to provide precise speed control for AC motors, but this effect the power quality, as the switching devices in the frequency drives produce a rich harmonic spectrum.  However, the DC motor has no adverse effects on power quality.  The construction of a DC motor is more complicated and expensive than that of an AC motor, mainly due to the commutator, brushes, and armature windings.  Furthermore, the maintenance of the brushes and commutator means more maintenance on a DC motor.

Advantages of DC Motors

The Basics of a D.C. motor is a permanent magnet is positioned around a loop of wire that is hooked up to a D.C. power source.  To make the loop of the wire spin, a battery or DC power supply is connected between its ends, and support it so it can spin about its axis.  The ends of the wire loop are connected to a set of contacts call commutator to allow the rotor to turn without twisting the wires.  These commutators rub against a set of conductors called the brushes.  As the commutator spins the brushes making electrical contact.  They are connected to the positive and negative leads of the power source, this allows electricity to flow through the loop.  The electricity flowing through the loop creates a magnetic field that interacts with the magnetic field of the permanent magnet to make the loop spin.
