Ion nitriding and carbonitriding in a glow discharge finds application in military, automobile, shipbuilding and oil extracting industries as well in the manufacturing of metal cutting machines, hydraulic gear pumps, building machines, food, wine and tobacco industry machines. The ion nitriding takes place in all industry branches. For example:

When this method is applied, the work pieces and tools treated, preserve their geometric dimensions and shape but acquire high wear resistance and increased surface hardness. Ion nitriding and carbonitriding process has big advantages by which it could be achieved nitrided layers with different thickness and structure. The method is wholly ecologic, the consumption of energy, working gases, and cooling water is minimal, the process duration is from 30 minutes to 20 hours or more and depending on the type of material and the required thickness of the nitrided layer.

We would like to make a short introduction of the activities of NIL EFTTOM by Technical University-Sofia. Our laboratory has been doing research in chemical-heat treatment of low temperature plasma, developing technologies for ion nitriding and carbonitriding and producing equipment for nitriding and carbonitriding in a direct-current or pulsed glow discharge for more than 30 years.
