A gasket is the lowest-cost component in a flanged assembly. It offers the greatest opportunity for overall cost saving if the design is right but the greatest potential for loss if the design is wrong. In summary:
don't re-use gaskets
don't use unbranded gaskets
don't use jointing compounds
the gasket should be as thin as possible
always lubricate bolts
if possible, select a torque which represents between 50% and 80% of the yield stress
use an acceptable assembly procedure
