This problem is solved by the special material used on the shaft of Reef Octopus pumps where lime is chemically unable to deposit on. We tested by having Water blaster pumps work in salt water with
calcium over 1600ppm/L for over 60 days nonstop. The results were astonishing.
This pump has an important characteristic specific to marine aquariums. Most pump manufactures do not consider the high calcium content in reef systems. Lime often finds its way to the shaft and adhere onto them lowering the performance or even causing the pump to seize.
Reef Octopus pump is the only pump on the market built with Silicon Nitride bearing. Being used as bearings in the main engine of NASAs space shuttles, Silicon Nitride is clearly different from other ceramics with its superior wear-resistance and thermal shock resistance.
