The system to the left is a simple surge tank (210 litre drum) that is buried below the level of the home's waste pipes. The pipes from the grey water source are diverted to this tank. Once the level inside the tank reaches a pre-determined amount, the pump automatically switches on and pumps the water onto a lawn or garden bed. Depending on the application, this water can be filtered before entering the tank to remove hair, lint etc from the water before it is passed through the pump to prevent blockage. This is a very effective and economical method of using grey water but one must remember that the water is not treated and must be used within 24 to 36 hours
