It can route the excess pressure in the body cavity back to the upstream throat of the valve. But when you use this kind of relief system, you must open the relief valve manually when the valve is closed.

When the plug rotates clockwise, the valve is opened; conversely as it rotates anti-clockwise, the valve can be closed. And it requires up to 5~7tures to open or close. The indicator at the top of the valve appears in line with the flow when the valve is open, and perpendicular to the flow when the valve is closed.
