There are two types of preaction valves: Single and Double Interlock. Single Interlock is where detection or pilot heads are needed to operate the valve releasing mechanism, which then provides water to the sprinkler system. It is then available to discharge once heat from a fire activates a sprinkler head. A Double Interlock valve needs both electronic and pneumatic activation to occur before the valve will trip, providing water to the activated sprinkler
Preaction Valves are used where additional security is needed to avoid accidental discharge of water, for instance, in a computer control room.
