An air intake shut-off valve is the quickest way to stop cylinder igniion and crankshaft rotation in an internal combustion engine.

Even if the ignition system is shut down on an over-speeding diesel engine, cylinder ignition can continue because of an inhaled combustible gas. In such a case, eliminating the intake airflow is the only method of stopping the engine.

Shut-off valves are installed primarily to stop uncontrolled engine over-speeds that can result from an inhaled combustible gas from the surrounding atmosphere. The valves are most commonly installed on diesel engines used in oil and gas related industries. However there are also gas and marine engine installation requirements.
