Air conditioning did not even make its way into the Chicago residential marketplace until the late 1940's.   Without air conditioning  many cities including Chicago were insufferable.  Some of the Chicago skyscrapers had awnings on every   floor to keep direct sunlight from raising temperatures even higher than they already were.  Inside ceiling and table fans kept the humid air from open windows at least moving around. People would go to Lincoln Park to cool off when temperatures got too hot.   On July 30, 1916 over 50,000 people spent the night in the park when the high was 102 degrees.
