OLD SHEFFIELD PLATE: This term refers to a process that was invented around 1790 in Sheffield, England. The method involved fusing a sheet of copper to a thinner sheet of sterling silver. Although made by premier Sheffield manufacturers, pieces were never marked using the word Sheffield.
