Silver knives and forks from the Romanov era:
Offered for the collector of Russian silver from the Czar period, a set of six knives and forks dated 1895.
The knives and forks were ordered for the table of Czar Nikolaj II, who lived from 1868-1918. He was the Czar of Russia and the Grand Duke of Finland(1894-1917)as Finland belonged to Russia during
this time.
The Silver:
The pieces of silver are stamped with the symbol WB and also the name W. Birkowski. This was done when an artisan made an item specifically for royalty to document their business success. WB is
catalogued as a master from the town of Minsk, and so to add his entire name is considered to be an important detail worth noting. In addition, there is a star symbol stamped on each piece.
According to experts on Russian silver, it is most likely that Czar Nikolaj II ordered the silver knives and forks with star for use at his table from Mr. W. Birkowski.
