To make a long story as short as possible, we create light with radio waves and electro-magnetic fields ..... which is really quite amazing and extremely energy efficient!
HOW THEY WORKIt is comprised of three key components, the high frequency solid state power source, the modulator and lastly the lamp bulb. The power source generates a frequency at 2.65 mhz. This frequency is sent to the modulator (contained within the lamp bulb) where it produces an electromagnetic field. The resulting signal emitted by the modulator generates plasma from an inert (harmless) gas. When the stimulated atoms of plasma return to their base state, the plasma radiates ultraviolet light. When the ultraviolet light comes in contact with the proprietary tri-phosphor coating on the inside of the lamp bulb, the lamp emits beautiful white light at 5,000 kelvin with a colour rendering index (CRI) rating of greater than 80.
These lamps are 4th generation electrodeless high frequency plasma discharge lamps or, in other words, the latest technological and advancement in induction lighting. It is a new light source that is representative of years of research and development. It produces high luminous efficacy, long life, excellent visual acuity, and high colour rendering while consuming a fraction of the energy required by traditional lamps. It is called by experts as "The beginning of the new reform of illumination".
The filaments and electrodes deteriorate with use, resulting in relatively short life expectancy and ever decreasing light output. In most of these lamps, light output will decrease by over 20% at 40% of stated life expectancy. Lamps that utilize a ballast such as metal halide and fluorescent, require a ballast that consumes additional energy to the stated lamp wattage. For example, a 250 watt metal halide will actually consume almost 300 watts of energy.
In many of these traditional lamps, liquid mercury is used as a catalyst in creating light in addition to several other products.
Before I describe the product, its attributes, and how it works, lets first look at traditional lamps, such as incandescent, fluorescent, mercury vapour, sodium vapour, and metal halide. All of which generate light either via a filament or an electrode that is contained within a glass bulb or tube. Electricity is applied to the filament or electrode, thereby generating heat, which in turn creates light.
