Philips to License CosmoPolis Outdoor Lighting System to Havells Sylvania March 31st , 2009Eindhoven, The Netherlands Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) is to accelerate further adoption of highly, energy-efficient outdoor lighting by granting a patent license to Havells Sylvania for application of Philips high-performance CosmoPolis system. The CosmoPolis system is built around CosmoWhite, a new Philips solution which enables highly effective white-light street illumination. In producing brighter, warmer white light, CosmoWhite improves the appearance of streets and other urban features and, in the process, providing a safer, more secure environment for residents to enjoy. Under the patent license agreement, Havells Sylvania will be entitled to manufacture and sell CosmoPolis-based products. Financial aspects of the license agreement were not disclosed. Since its launch in 2005, CosmoPolis system has transformed the ambience of over 150 municipal locations in Europe, Asia and the United States, while at the same time, reducing energy costs by more then 50%. This has been achieved by enabling municipalities to migrate from high pressure mercury- or even sodium outdoor lighting to the highly efficient ceramic metalhalide-based CosmoPolis solution, with its significantly lower electricity consumption and low operational cost. Rene van Schooten, Executive VP of Philips Lighting and CEO of the Business Group Lamps, comments: I am delighted to welcome Havells Sylvania to our effort in driving the adoption of this highly energy-efficient white light technology in urban and outdoor lighting. Together we will be able to broaden the application of ceramic metal-halide based lighting, transforming cities and towns in the process, while reducing the energy costs municipalities and their citizens have to bear.Nick Farraway, Vice President, Lamps and Fixtures, at Havells Sylvania further commented: This is a great step forward in the continuing growth strategy of the Havells Sylvania brand. Our entry into the fast-growing ceramic metal halide market further consolidates our international presence in the worldwide lighting industry and gives our customers even greater choice in energy saving and sustainable lighting technologies."
