A grid connected PV lighting system shares the usual benefits of any building integrated PV system. However as the PV modules are usually mounted on the roof, a conventional PV system can be hidden from view. With the PV modules fitted to the top of lighting columns the PV modules are highly visible and a striking display of a commitment towards using renewable energy.

A grid connected PV lighting system can produce a significant proportion of the electricty required to power the lights if designed correctly and combined with a conservative approach to energy management.

During the day the electricity produced can be used locally or exported. During the night however the lamps draw power from the mains supply. As the lamps work off the mains supply there are no limitations to the operating time or light levels that can be acheived.

Grid Connected LightingFirst developed in the Western Isles of Scotland, grid connected PV lighting does not share the limitations of stand alone systems.

Grid connected PV lighting works in a very similar way to any grid connected PV system fitted to the roof of a building. The main difference being that the PV modules are attached to the top of the lighting columns.
