This skill was transformed into a business venture to produce conference bags, file covers and a range of other woven products suitable for the corporate and conference markets. Their products bags are woven from two types of indigenous sedges known as ikhwane and induma.
Indigenous reeds and sedges have been used to weave household goods in this region for millennia. The use of fibre products in African society stretches back to the Iron Age, and once included the skill of knotting watertight baskets for storing liquids. Certain traditional items such as sleeping mats (icansi) and beer strainers (ivovo) are still commonly made in rural households today.
