Furthermore, it was discovered that the heat generators using nickel chromium as the wire generating the heat have a high risk of catching on fire. This type of accident occurs when the heat generation wire is short-circuited and, as a result, partial heat escalation occurs, along with a decrease of electrical resistance, at the same location. In an effort to prevent this type of accident, it is required that these types of generators either be insulated on their surface, or in-between heat generation wires, using sufficiently thick, electrical, non-conducting material. HotMesh alleviates this problem altogether by utilizing carbon in place of nickel chromium. The carbon is non-flammable and a superior heat conductor.

HotMesh was immediately identified as an innovative product with a multitude of applications above and beyond the existing options available on the market. The initial discovery was made that the existing, semi-rigid, flat-shaped heat generators contained a few design deficiencies. First off, it was noticed that these generators have a weak physical structure (100 - 500 kg/cm2). Secondly, it was identified that they also lack uniformity in resistance and thermal distribution and also display a stability deficiency in several circumstances. These limitations were found to create difficulties when applying this type of technology to current market products, impairing new applications on heat engineering. Using an extreme amount of insulators for protection can lead to a decrease of heat conduction, causing a decrease in the effectiveness of heat generation in wire-shaped heat generators. As a result, uniform heat distribution is not possible.

Dr. Lee originally invented HotMesh in Korea. The goal in developing a heated mesh was to come up with a more viable solution for heating surfaces than was currently on the market. The resulting product has proven to be successful in providing the hidden technological solution required in the marketplace, due in large part to the following characteristics.
