Water is essential in the mixing process of the concrete/ cement mixture, but water also leads to the formation of hydrated lime and calcium silicates. This is good if the concrete is reinforced using steel rods as it inhibits corrosion. However, normal E or C glass fibers in the presence of lime (high alkali content, >13) will start to corrode and lose a significant amount of their mechanical strength over time. Alkali resistant (AR) glass fibers are able to resist the alkali effects, thus retaining up to 80% of its tensile strength.
Alkali Resistant (AR) glassfibres are ideal for GRC and external wall reinforcement application.
