Machine Construction
The American Broach Cutting Tool Sharpener has been designed and
manufactured based on twenty years of experience building and using
this equipment. The substantial structure of the weldment, the rigidity
of the bearing and drive systems and the capacity of the motors were
incorporated to permit the manufacture of close tolerance new tools as
well as re-sharpening of used cutting tools.
Five Axes CNC System
All three slide systems incorporate high performance linear ball bearings
for the ultimate in accuracy and rigidity. These long life bearings
permit very precise movement of heavy loads with extremely low coefficient
of friction. The rotary axes bearings maintain close tolerances,
yield fast response and are extremely rigid.
X Axis- CNC Controlled Lateral (Side to Side) Axis Table Motion
A closed loop AC servo motor drive system moves the table laterally
for the ultimate in control. Precise movement is possible through a
combination of anti-backlash coupling, precision ground and pre-loaded
ball screw and nut assembly and high performance linear ball bearings.
The movement is controlled within 0.0001 inch increments. Speed is
infinitely variable from zero to 100+ inches per minute.
Y Axis- CNC Controlled Fore/Aft (In & Out) Axis Slide Motion
The fore/aft motion is accomplished through the column with rigidity
and accuracy similar to the X axis. The motor drive and bearing
systems, tolerance limits and speed range are similar to those applied
to the X axis. Sharpening or backing-off broaches with shear is accomplished
by coordinating the X and Y axes with a simple standard
program input.
Z Axis- CNC Controlled Vertical (Up & Down) Axis
The spindle vertical axis slide is connected to the rigid column for the
ultimate in system integrty. The motor, drive and bearing systems,
tolerance limits and speed range which give the superior performance
to the X and Y axes, have been applied to the Z axis. Axis travel of the
spindle is controlled within 0.0001 inch increments with a maximum
travel of 15 inches. The Z axis can be coordinated with the Y axis to
move the spindle up while moving the table out with a simple program
input. This Y/Z action can be coordinated with the X axis to simplify the
sharpening of tools such as fir tree broaches.
A Axis- CNC Controlled Rotary Axis
The rotary axis can turn the broach cutting tool from zero to 500 revolutions
per minute. The axis is driven by a closed looped A.C. servo
motor system. The A axis can be coordinated with the X axis to permit
sharpening of spiral gullet (spirex/continuous engagement) broach
cutting tools. Additional software is available to allow for rock broach
grinding, to accomodate piston, convex, and convace tooth gullet
forms.
B Axis- Manually Set Hook and Back-Off Angles
The B axis can be varied 180 degrees to adjust the grinding wheel to
the corresponding broach cutting tool hook or back-off angle. After adjusting
the spindle to the exact angle, the pivot is then clamped securely
to the Z axis slide providing the rigidity that yields excellent surface
finish, close tolerance and longer grinding wheel life.
C Axis- Manually Set Shear or Helix Angle
The C axis is easily adjusted to sharpen and back-off broaches with a
shear angle or continuous engagement round and spline broaches. The
