Clairefontaine produces its own paper for the notebooks, to ensure its legendary quality. The famous "brushed vellum 90 gsm" paper is highly resistant and opaque, thus preventing the ink from
"bleeding", and offers a unique satin finish for easy writing. It's superb, yet not glaring whiteness, also stems from extensive research. The thick, laminated covers of the notebooks offer great
strength to the product.
COMPANY BACKGROUND
In 1858, Jean-Baptiste Bichelberger chose the small town of Etival-Clairefontaine in the Vosges mountains to set up his paper mill. The river brought water and energy, the forest brought wood, thus
the company grew rapidly. The first stationary products from the mill (envelopes and notebooks) were sold around 1890. But Clairefontaine's real expansion dates back to 1950, owing to Charles
Nusse, (great grand son of Jean-Baptiste Bichelberger), who decided to modernize the facilities and reinforce the quality of the products. Charles Nusse also created a logo for the family-owned
company. Clairefontaine at that time became "THE" reference for school books.
