What is EPS? Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a lightweight, rigid cellular plastic that is made from the polymerization of styrene monomer. Styrene, a by product of crude oil extraction is also found naturally in foods such as Strawberries, nuts and beans. The polymerization process produces translucent spherical beads of polystyrene about the size of sugar granules. Expanded Polystyrene is also commonly referred to as Polystyrene Foam. This is because the energy required to manufacture and transport EPS is much less than conventional packaging materials such as timber, straw, cork or cardboard. In addition EPS packing is completely recyclable. The Magic of EPS Packaging EPS is used widely as a packaging medium for a variety of products. Its exceptional shock absorbing characteristics make it ideal for the storage and transport of fragile and expensive items such as electronic equipment, chemicals and wines. The thermally insulated and moisture resistant properties of EPS enable freshness extension of perishable products such as fruit, vegetables and seafood. Moreover, its compression resistance means that EPS is ideal for stackable goods packaging The majority of EPS packaging manufactured in Australia is used in the transport of fruit, vegetables and seafood. EPS packaging is used extensively for both the domestic and export market. When safety is paramount, EPS comes into its own. It is used in the manufacture of childrens car seats and cycling helmets, where its protective qualities, strength and shock-absorbency are vital. EPS also has applications in horticulture as seedling trays. Granulated EPS can also be added as a soil conditioner to promote the aeration of the soil. EPS and Environmental Benefits The excellent properties of EPS, while providing economic and high performance products, are further enhanced by its environmentally friendly characteristics. A study conducted by Melbourne University, Life Cycle Analysis of Produce Boxes: Comparison of Expanded Polystyrene and corrugated cardboard (1996), confirmed that globally the environmental impact of EPS produce boxes is less than for fiberboard boxes performing the same task. *Fiberboard packaging generates 2.8 times the greenhouse emission over its lifecycle compared to EPS. *The manufacture of EPS raw material and processing into usable products does not require the use of CFCs or HCFCs. *EPS is 95% air.
