PVC Film

Providing moisture resistance to another plastic film compound.

Acting as a barrier to the loss (or gain) of flavors and odors.

Acting as a barrier to the entry (or exit) of gases from a container.

Providing maximum opacity.

Providing high clarity and sparkle to a container.

Improving a flexible plastic film's ability to accept printing.

Providing resistance to static electricity.

Providing ultra-violet light resistance to a product.

Improving the impact resistance of a container, particularly in low temperatures.

Providing greater heat-distortion resistance to "hot fill" packaging.

Benefit

PVC film (polyvinyl chloride) can be produced with an extraordinary range of characteristics and qualities, from rigid PVC (in thin and thick gauges) to semi-rigid PVC, to plasticized; from polished, clear, highly transparent film to matte finished (in many embossed patterns) clear or colored, transparent or opaque PVC film; from 30 microns to 650 microns thickness.

Specification

Non-food packaging applications of PVC film include use as an overwrap on boxed games and toys; as shrink wrap holding together a series of aseptic packages or other types of containers; as "skin" or "blister" packaging holding small items onto a coated paperboard card; and as "stretch" wrap used to hold a number of large items together or to fasten them to a shipping pallet.

PVC and PVDC films are also commonly used as "institutional packaging," or as an overwrap on trays of food, salad, etc. prepared by cafeterias, restaurants, and caterers. These films have good "cling" characteristics, allowing them to stick to themselves or a plate to help retard spoilage of the prepared food. A third food application is as part of a multilayer vacuum and/or heat sealed plastic wrap on something like cheese.

Most flexible PVC film is used for packaging food products. PVC film is similarly desired for use in wrapping fresh poultry because it allows naturally occurring gases to escape from the container. If they were not allowed to escape, the buildup of gases might cause undesirable odors when opened.

Applications for PVC film are equally varied, from stationery to wine bottle caps, from credit card stock to industrial adhesive tapes, from battery wrap to candy twist. There are many uses for PVC. As a hard plastic, it is used as vinyl siding, magnetic stripe cards, window profiles, gramophone records (which is the source of the name for vinyl records), pipe, plumbing and conduit fixtures. It can be made softer and more flexible by the addition of plasticizers, the most widely used being phthalates. In this form, it is used in clothing and upholstery, and to make flexible hoses and tubing, flooring, to roofing membranes, and electrical cable insulation. The material is often used for pipelines in the water and sewer industries because of its inexpensive nature and flexibility.

Application

Polyvinyl chloride ,commonly abbreviated PVC, is a widely used plastic. In terms of revenue generated, it is one of the most valuable products of the chemical industry. Globally, over 50% of PVC manufactured is used in construction. As a building material, PVC is cheap and easy to and assemble. In recent years, PVC has been replacing traditional building materials such as wood, concrete and clay in many areas. Both PVC and PVDC films are considered desirable because of their barrier properties, clarity, puncture resistance, and "cling" which allows for good sealability.
