Step 2: Bio-degradationis a microbiological stage in which biodegradation of the fragmentedpolymer takes place. The molecular weight of the polymer is reducedduring the first step to levels that will allow bacteria, fungi andalgae to consume the carbon backbone fragments into their trophicprocess. The end chemical products of the biodegradation step are CO2,H2O, a small quantity of minerals and biomass with no toxic or harmfulresidues to soil, plants or macro-organisms.

Step 1: Oxo-degradationis an abiotic/chemical stage which begins with the cleavage of carbonchain backbone in PE and PP into shorter chain molecules and theincorporation of oxygen into these molecules as organic functionalgroups (i.e.: carboxylic or hydro-carboxilic acids, esters as well asaldehydes and alcohols). The hydrocarbon polymers change theirbehaviour from hydrophobic to hydrophilic thereby allowing thefragmented polymer to absorb water.

Degradationreactions will start soon after the product is made, but the fact thatthe formulation contains a stabilizing package moderates thesereactions so that outward signs of degradation such as loss ofmechanical integrity should not be evident. This leads to the conceptof an induction period for break down and thus a useful shelf life.   additiveworks to break down the carbon-carbon bonds in the plastic leading to alowering of the molecular weight and eventually to a loss of strengthand other properties. The plastic does not just fragment, but isconsumed by micro-organisms after the additive has reduced themolecular weight to sub 40,000 Daltons, and it is therefore"biodegradable." This process continues until the material hasbiodegraded to nothing more than CO2, water, humus, and trace elements.
