Thermal Control
The flexible MLI material is optimal for this application because of the extreme insulation properties and stringent space requirements. There is a +/- 2mm tolerance between the exterior vessel
wall and the magnet coils. An MLI design can range from a few simple layers, to a complex array of blankets, the Wendelstein 7-X uses a twenty layer MLI blanket. The designs of these layers
typically reflect 95% of radiation. The total effect by the time the radiation energy makes its way to the innermost layers, is effectively a 100% reflective barrier. Many of these Dunmore
materials are used in aerospace applications as our Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) and are found in our catalog.
Advanced Stellarator
Wendelstein 7-X is an advanced stellarator designed to create energy by generating a sustained nuclear fusion reaction by confining hot plasma within a magnetic field. The extreme heat of the
plasma is contained with a superconducting magnet system. MAN DWE is constructing the vacuum vessel, the plasma inside reaching 100 million degrees. The magnetic field creates a separation between
the plasma and the interior vessel wall and Multi-layer Insulation (MLI) is used to reduce heat conduction and radiation to the external components. The MLI helps maintain the ambient external
temperature necessary for the components to function.
DUNMORE GmbH is the number one supplier of high temperature insulation films for the Wendelstein 7-X core fusion experiment. The Wendelstein 7-X project, being constructed at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald Germany, is designed to test factors of nuclear fusion for power plant application; specifically test the parameters in controlling the 100 million degree plasma. Assembly of the stellarator began in early 2005 and is scheduled for completion in 2012.
