ALMOND OIL

The almond belongs to the tribe Prunae of thenatural order Rosaceae. Its botanical name is Amygdalus communis.Almond oil is a clear pale yellow, oily liquid having slight andcharacteristic odour with a bland and nutty taste. It consists chieflyof Olein with a small proportion of Glyceride of Linolic Acid and otherGlycerides.

Claimed health benefits include improvedcomplexion, improved movement of food through the colon (feces) and theprevention of cancer. Recent research associates the inclusion ofalmonds in the diet with elevating the blood levels of high densitylipoproteins and of lowering the levels of low density lipoproteins.

A controlled trial showed that 73g of almondsin the daily diet reduced LDL cholesterol by as much as 9.4 % reducedthe LDL: HDL ratio by 12.0%, and increased HDL-cholesterol (i.e., thegood cholesterol) by 4.6%.

Almond is considered a nutritive for brain andnervous system. It is said to induce high intellectual level andlongevity. Almond oil is called Roghan Badam in both Ayurveda and UnaniTibb (the Greco-Persian System of Medicine). It is extracted by coldprocess and is considered a nutritive aphrodisiac both for massage andinternal consumption. Recent studies have shown that the constituentsof almond have anti-inflammatory, immunity boosting, andanti-hepatotoxicity effects.
