Eucalyptus oil is used commonly as a decongestant and expectorant for upper respiratory tract infections or inflammations, as well as for various musculoskeletal conditions. Eucalyptus has attracted attention from global researchers. Its oil can be used for cleaning and functions as a natural insecticide, and it is sometimes used to drain swamps and thereby reduce malaria risk. Eucalyptus oil is known throughout the world for its use as a decongestant in colds and influenza. The genus is endemic to the southern hemisphere and is part of the large myrtaceae family of plants. It has a cleansing effect on skin and reduces redness and irritation. Its oil is reputed to aid in wound healing and is antiseptic and antiparasitic. It relieve tension and stress with relaxing effect on the nervous system and reducing rheumatism and gout pain. It has been promoted for cough/bronchitis and rheumatism. Eucalyptus as an ingredient in over-the-counter drugs is used for temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and for temporary relief of nasal congestion and coughs associated with a cold.
