Medicinal Uses of Patchouli
Patchouli leaves have been used to make an infusion to treat dysentery,diarrhea, colds without fevers, vomiting, and nausea. Fresh leaves bruised andapplied to burns aid in healing. The essential oil is used externally to treatskin problems including dry and chapped skin, fungal problems, and acne, and asan aphrodisiac. In aromatherapy it is used to calm the nerves as well as tocontrol appetite, to treat depression, stress, and lack of sexual interest. Italso has been used in deodorants, to mask perspiration; of course for thisapplication you will want to be sure you enjoy the scent. The oil as well asthe leaf infusion has been used externally to treat dandruff, dermatitis,eczema, and acne.

Patchouli is most often used in aromatherapy. The dried leaves and stems are employed in traditional Chinese medicine to normalize the flow and balance of the life force known as qi (or chi). In aromatherapy,Patchouli is recognized for its antidepressant, anti-inflammatory,antimicrobial, aphrodisiac, cicatrisant (helps formation of scar tissue),cytophylactic (encourages growth of new skin cells), deodorant, fungicidal,nervine and prophylactic properties. It is indicated for use with dermatitis,cracked and dry skin, athletes foot, wrinkles, wounds, eczema, lethargy,stress, anxiety, as a sedative in low doses and to help ground the spirit.

Patchouli Oil is a perfumery raw material, it blends well in all types of perfumes contributing a rich spicy aroma and has been used in its own right as the perfume of the 'hippies' of the 1960's and by aroma therapists. As a perfume component it contributes odour but the constituents also give the oil good fixative properties, particularly in soap perfumes. Some 'Patchouli synthetics exist, but they are expensive and do not give the odour profile of the oil.
