Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint oil, which is also known as the brandy mint and balm mint, is extracted from Mentha piperita, a member of the Labiatae family. Thin in consistency, it is clear in color with a tinge of yellow. It has a fresh, strong minty aroma. It provides soothing and calming effects on mind and body. Peppermint oil is used in Aromatherapy for stimulating the mind, which in turn enhances the focus. It is known for its anesthetic, antispasmodic and antiseptic therapeutic properties. Peppermint essential oil lessens the reddishness of skin and also prevents irritation and itchiness. It is an effective remedy for asthma, headache, flatulence, sinusitis, nausea, fever, and scabies. It has proved to be very beneficial in clearing the chest congestion. It gives a boost to the digestive system, thereby preventing the body from falling prey to gastronomical problems. Peppermint is an effective analgesic. It efficiently plays the role of an expectorant. It works wonders in combating mental fatigue. It was initially cultivated in the Mediterranean regions. However, now it is also grown in USA, Japan, Britain and Italy. This herbal plant has varied species, one out of which is peppermint piperita, a hybrid of water mint and spearmint. The oil is extracted from the part of plant lying above the ground just before flowering. The partly dried plant undergoes the process of steam distillation, yielding 0.1 - 1.0 % essential oil.
