The essential oil has a pale blue-greenish to pale blue colour with a sweet, slightly fruity, apple-like aroma. Oil exposed to air becomes brownish or yellowish.
The flowers are harvested and steam-distilled as fresh, wilted, or dried material.
chamomile is a perennial herb that grows about twenty to forty centimetres tall. It is a half-spreading (creeping) plant. The plants have fine, pale-green, feathery leaves and bear small, daisy-like flowers with white petals (florets) around a yellow centre on long stems. The flowers are slightly larger than that of German Chamomile.
