PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CONSTANTS OF CALAMUS OIL:-

   Calamus rhizome has been used in many different ways.It has been used medicinally foe its relaxant, spasmolytic and hypertensive properties. Calamus and its eztract have also been used as an insecticide. In recent times, the essenyial oil of calamus as experienced fairly wide spread uses in flavours foe liqueurs as well as in fine perfumes and dental preparations. In Ayurvedic system of medicine the rhizomes are considered to possess antispasmodic, carminative, anthelmintic properties and are used to cure many disorders such as epilepsy and mental diseases . The odour of the calamus root and the essential oil is warm and spicy. It reminds one of a sweet forest odour mixed with that of dried milk.

USES:-

      The calamus oil was examined for the stability of (alfa-asarone and bita-asarone in ethanolic and aqueous solutions. It was found that the solution of both asarones were stored in the dark at ambient temperatures for the six month, no chemical transformations were observed. However, when the solutions were stored in day light, repid isomerization of both asarones took place. In fact, no bita-asarone could be detected in the solutions after six months.

         Acorus calamus ia a small genus of herbs comprising of two species found in north temperate regions and southeast Asia. Calamus is found in abundance throughout India, ascending to heights of 6000 feet in the Himalayas. In India, it is often cultivation in damp marshy place and is fairly common in Manipur, Naga hills, Kashmir and Sirmor. The calamus rhizomes have been used in many different ways.
