PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CONSTANT OF EUCALYPTUS OIL.

It is also an ingredient of ointments used for local applications and instant relief of cough and cold symptoms. The oil has antiseptic properties and is widly used as sterilizing agent.

  Oil is used in large quantities in fragrances and flavouring  and also in medicinal preparation. Eucalyptus oil is mentioned in many pharmacopoeia and medicinal ingredient. The oil has germicidal and disinfectant properties. E. globules oil is a rich source of cineole and germicidal in action. It is used as an antiseptic, especially in the treatment of infection of the upper respiratory tract and in certain type of skin diseases. Internally, it has been used as astimulating expectorant in chronic bronchitis.

USES:-

      The most favourable time of distillation is April to September. The yield of oil in average is 0.8-1.2%. The physical constants recoded in the European pharmacopoeia 2002 are relative density (20*C) 0.906 to 0.925, refractive index (20*C) 1.458 to 1.470 and optical rotation 0* to +10*. It is also used as a fiavour modifier in pharmaceutical and dentifrice products.

       The genus Eucalyptus is a industrially important trees as a source of veriety of products used in pharmaceuticals, cellulose, paper pulp, tannings, industrial alcohol and organic acids. Leaves on hydro distillation produce essential oilthat is known as eucalyptus oil that have insect repellant, pesticidal, bactericidal and anti fungal properties along with their pharmaceuticals flavour and perfumery uses. As such eucalyptus plantations are raised mainly for the production of wood to meet the demand of timber and fuel. Eucalyptus plantations are harvested after 7-8 years and large quantities of leaves go waste although these leaves are potential source of aroma chemicals and also commercially important.
