The Karite tree(shea tree) grows without assistance from man. In fact, most attempts by the
Europeans to cultivate it have proven to be unsuccessful. The tree grows naturally in the wild.
Every summer, a plum-sized fruit is produced by the tree, from which a nut is removed. It is from
this nut that shea butter is produced. First, the shea nuts are crushed. Then, the crushed nuts are
heated and then ground into a thick paste. Water is then mixed in with the paste, and after a boiling
process, the shea butter is then scooped off the top. The butter is then cooled and hardened leaving
you with what we know as unrefined, raw shea butter. Unrefined, Raw shea butter ranges in color
from a beige to off-white, to a mild yellow, to a bright yellow. It has a slight nutty odor, which
wears off within minutes of applying to the skin.
