Ectoin:
Ectoin is a natural, active extremolyte (also known as compatible solute) produced as self-protection by specific microorganisms (extremophiles) living in extreme environments. Ectoin helps these microorganisms to survive, e. G. , in the hot water of geysers, the dryness of the salt desert, under the Antarctic ice or under extremely high pressure on the bed of the deep sea.
Proven properties of Ectoin:
Protects the hydrolipid system
One function of Ectoin is that it forms hydrate shells around cells under the skin which bind vital moisture in the cell membranes and thereby prevent the cell from losing its normal structure and dieing under stress.
Cell protection
Ectoin accelerates the production of heat shock proteins by the skin by a factor of 2 or 3. The production of these thermal shock proteins must be increased if skin cells are exposed to environmental stress. This endogenous protection mechanism maintains the viability of cells under stress conditions.
Immune protection / UV protection
Ectoin stabilizes the so called Langerhans cells of the skin which have a key function in the immune system of the skin. They protect the skin, e.
